About R.E.M.

Alternative Rock

American alt-rock pioneers R.E.M. emerged in the 1980s, blending jangly guitars, cryptic lyrics and melodic hooks that defined the college-rock movement and later mainstream alternative rock. Their sound evolved from lo-fi post-punk to richly layered, anthemic rock, anchored by Michael Stipe’s distinctive vocal delivery and Peter Buck’s chiming guitar work.\n\nRenowned for emotionally resonant concerts, the band cultivated a reputation for expansive setlists and a willingness to reinterpret older material in fresh ways, often delivering powerful performances that balanced intimacy with stadium-scale energy. Their live shows have been celebrated for creating communal experiences that reflect the depth of their catalog.\n\nR.E.M. is not currently touring; recent activity centers on archival releases and solo projects. In 2026 the group issued a live LP commemorating their 25th-anniversary edition, while frontman Michael Stipe announced his first solo album slated for early 2027.
